What Should I Do If My Child Has a Dental Emergency?

Accidents can happen in an instant, and if your child experiences a dental emergency, it is important to contact our office immediately. In some instances, rapid treatment can be essential to save your child’s tooth.

Before contacting our office, it is important to follow some basic guidelines for oral trauma:

Immediately evaluate the mouth, head, face, or neck for further injuries.  If you are unsure of the severity of the injury, we recommend taking your child immediately to the emergency room for evaluation.

  • If a tooth is broken or chipped – if possible, find and save the chip and contact our office
  • If a baby tooth is knocked out – if possible, find and save the tooth, do not attempt to place the tooth back in the child’s mouth, and contact our office.
  • If an adult tooth is knocked out – the best option is to rinse the tooth with water and place it back in the socket as soon as possible. If the tooth is unable to be placed into the socket it should be placed in milk immediately. A knocked-out permanent tooth can heal if put back into place quickly enough.

If your child is experiencing any of these dental emergencies, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office immediately.
